A New Strategy for Sustainable Tourism in Hulu Tembeling
We’re pleased to share the Sustainable Tourism Strategy for Hulu Tembeling, a new report setting out how tourism in the villages bordering the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve can grow in a way that benefits local communities, without overwhelming the rivers, forests and way of life that make this landscape special.
Hulu Tembeling has welcomed visitors for years, drawn by its rivers, waterfalls and village life. As the Reserve becomes more established and interest in the region grows, this strategy offers a shared vision for the seven villages of Hulu Tembeling — one built on the community’s own priorities, not imposed from outside.
What Went Into the Report
The strategy draws on household surveys, focus group discussions and participatory mapping carried out directly with the community, together with field visits to assess tourism sites first-hand. It builds on earlier social and tourism research conducted ahead of the Reserve’s establishment, bringing together the voices of boatmen, tourism operators, orchard owners, forest product collectors and women’s groups from across the region.
What’s Inside
An assessment of tourism assets across Hulu Tembeling’s Malay and Orang Asli villages — from waterfalls, rivers and fishing spots to cultural heritage and local cuisine
- A proposed vision and branding direction for tourism in the region, positioning Hulu Tembeling as an authentic, off-the-beaten-track alternative to Kuala Tahan
- Practical recommendations for community-led tourism development — from accommodation and guide training to fair and equitable participation for Orang Asli communities
Why It Matters
Tourism, done well, has real potential to support livelihoods in Hulu Tembeling while reinforcing the conservation goals of the Reserve. This report is a step toward making sure that, as more people discover this part of Pahang, the benefits are felt first by the people who call it home.
The strategy was developed with support from the European Union and the Ministry of Finance’s Sustainable Tourism Malaysia initiative.
